Allen Consulting Group is an idea that has been in the planning stage for a long time. For years as a Director of Information
Systems and before that when I held several different information technology management positions, I contracted with
consulting companies and employment search firms.
Some of the firms I hired were excellent. Others weren't so good. The ones I liked were the ones that would critique my
requests and give me their opinion. I liked the firms whose people looked me in the eye and said, "Why do you want to do
that"? They provided me with guidance. They helped ME be successful with my projects.
The ones I didn't like were the "yes-men". The ones that would do anything and everything I asked for, even if it didn't make
sense. I didn't like the ones that only sold time. They were never invited back. So many of them talked a good game but had no
idea of how the technology they represented actually worked.
My goal with Allen Consulting Group is to do whatever I can to make the the client and the candidate successful. I won't send
candidates on interviews that I don't personally feel is a good match. I won't waste the candidates time nor the clients. I will
define the requirements on both sides of the equation.
This approach will sometimes backfire. My front-end analysis of the client's and candidate's needs may end up with me
recommending they don't need help from the outside and the project can be done with existing personnel. That'll happen. I will
lose business. But my bet is they'll call us again next time.
Long-term relationships, that's what I want.
