How Do
You Screen Out Unqualified Candidates?
Candidates
are initially screened on paper or online.
- After
we receive a resume, we compare the candidate’s background to
the job requirements from our clients.
The majority of candidates are eliminated in this step.
Most are never interviewed because of their lack of
technical background, short longevity of former jobs, or excessive
dollar requirements.
- Resumes
with lots of typos, spelling errors and errors in grammar are
double screened. These
types of errors usually reflect how well a candidate will perform
on written work on the job. If
they don’t proofread their resume, they probably won’t
proofread their work.
If a
candidate looks good on paper, we contact them by phone.
- We
listen to communication skills.
We talk about technical backgrounds, managerial backgrounds
and career aspirations. We listen to them.
- We
listen to their ability to explain things, ability to
express an idea, ability to stay on track, avoid tangents and
answer a question. We
listen to grammar, pronunciation and choice of words.
Speaking skills are a critical success factor in many jobs.
- We
talk about jobs they’ve had and where they want to go.
We ask about projects they’ve worked on, tools they’ve
used and their role in each project phase.
- We
listen to motivation.
We listen to the questions candidates ask about clients.
If the candidate stresses money, benefits, vacation, and
work hours that tells a lot about their motivation.
We like people motivated by the job.
We like people who ask about projects, technology, business
and how they may fit in. We
look for team players.
